Outreach and Engagement are carried out at different ways as East Carolina University enacts the motto "servire" or "to serve."  In the School of Communication, we do both outreach and engagement in support of ECU's new Carnegie designation as an engaged university.

Service Learning

Service Learning is one form of engagement which benefits both students and the community by linking academic coursework with community service to meet a need.  Students gain practical, applied experience with a community organization and learn as they reflect on how communication relates to broad social issues.

Since 2001, our students have worked with many organizations to help meet their communication needs to include:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs

  • American Red Cross

  • STARS/SONS Leadership Academy

  • Communities in Schools

  • Teddy Bear Center

  • Pitt-Martin Partnership for Children

  • Rocking Horse Ranch

  • Habitat for Humanity

  • Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina

  • Family Violence Program

  • Carolina Pregnancy Center

  • Family Support Network

  • Marley Fund

  • Episicopal Hispanic Ministry

  • Children’s Hospital at PCMH

  • Humane Society of ENC

  • Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Center

  • Aseracare Hospice
