MM, concentration in Music History & Literature:

The MM, concentration in Music History & Literature, requires minimum coursework of 33 credit hours.

All applicants for graduate study in the School of Music will take a diagnostic examination to determine preparation for graduate study. For more information about this diagnostic exam

Applicants for the MM in Music History & Literature, should submit the following portfolio materials in support of their application for the graduate program:

  • Personal statement: Typed 750-1000 word essay discussing your background and musical training, including your interest in musicology and a statement of your professional goals.
  • A substantive, adequately documented music-history or music-theory paper (10-25 pages), which demonstrates potential for musicological and analytical study of music, as well as appropriate research and writing skills.

In order to earn the degree, candidates for the MM in Music History & Literature must satisfy the course requirements specified in the graduate catalog, including a methodically researched thesis of substantial proportions (minimum 50 pages), written under faculty supervision.
