A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Michael Scholtz attended North Carolina State University and received his BA and DMD degrees from the University of Louisville. Dr. Scholtz decided to serve his country pursuing a distinguished thirty-year career in the United States Navy Dental Corps. During his Navy career Dr. Scholtz completed a residency program in Comprehensive Dentistry at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland in 1988. He served in a number of clinical, administrative, and leadership positions ashore, afloat and overseas including serving as Medical liaison for the US Navy for all of Southeast Asia in Singapore from 1997 to 2001, Executive Officer, Naval Dental Center Northeast where he was Chief Operations Officer for headquarters and 8 dental clinics located in 7 states spanning from Maine to Pennsylvania, Navy Inspector General for Navy Dentistry, and Clinic Director-Senior Dentist United States Naval Academy from which he retired. During his career he received numerous awards including 5 Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, National Service Defense Medal, and Humanitarian Service medals.
Dr. Scholtz joins the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine where he will be Associate Professor and Director of its Community Clinics/Service Learning Centers where dental providers, students and residents will be delivering exceptional state of the art dental care to underserved areas throughout North Carolina.
Dr. Scholtz attained Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry and is a Fellow in the both the American and International Colleges of Dentists. He is married to Janice Kocikowski Scholtz, formerly of Michigan City, Indiana, and the proud father of Herman and Briony Scholtz. His interests include athletics, boating, fitness, and practically any other outdoor activities.
