Selected Biographical Information

Dr. McCarlie is a specialist in Orthodontics and serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthodontics in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Dr. McCarlie received a bachelor’s and master’s in Public Policy from Brigham Young University, his dental degree from UNLV’s School of Dental Medicine, and doctoral and orthodontic education at Indiana University. He has the distinction of being educated as a clinical and translational scientist. He received two Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) awards during his education as well as numerous grants and awards. He also has both theoretical and practical experience in curriculum development. Dr. McCarlie is the author of numerous abstracts and articles. Moreover, he has studied education policy and curriculum, oral health and smoking, the oral-systemic link, cariology, the immunology and genetics of dental caries, orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics and orthodontic and dental history.

Dr. McCarlie’s major responsibilities include teaching orthodontics to predoctoral students as well as supporting the development and implementation of the orthodontic preclinical and clinical curriculum, especially with regard to craniofacial growth and development.

Dr. McCarlie will be treating orthodontic patients within the faculty practice at ECU’s School of Dental Medicine. He and his wife Leslie reside in Greenville and are the proud parents of 3 beautiful girls: Mary, Grace, and Lucy.
