While many people enjoy good health and few changes in their activities with the years, others may develop serious conditions that require ongoing medical attention.
Our geriatric services are provided by caring staff members who understand the special needs of patients 62 years old and older. We have specially-trained doctors to provide this care in our new Robert and Frances Monk Geriatric Center, a bright, spacious center with 12 roomy exam areas, wide halls for wheelchairs, and comfortable furnishings.
The compassionate doctors of ECU Physicians Geriatrics Division can provide all of your care, including check-ups as well as attention for problems that may arise from chronic conditions such as diabetes. When needed, we can make referrals to specialists and coordinate your care. We provide support and guidance to caregivers.
Because existing illnesses such as obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure can worsen unexpectedly, we carefully watch for those changes. We also understand the importance of making sure medications are monitored and adjusted as needed. Our doctors offer evaluations for memory loss, dementia and falling.
We have proudly offered geriatrics care at our medical school since it opened in 1981. Today, we are able to build on our many years of experience and the discoveries since then to understand and treat the conditions of aging.
Our services include
- general health care
- consultations for hospitalized patients
- evaluations for older patients
- long-term care for institutionalized patients
