When a loved one dies, family members may want to know more about the cause of death. There may be a legal requirement for an autopsy or a request from law enforcement officers.
The Division of Autopsy and Forensic Services at the Brody School of Medicine provides local and regional consultation and autopsy services. Our specially trained physicians are board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology. Our faculty members have additional training, some in cell biology, cardiac pathology, computer science and forensic anthropology. These highly skilled professionals are able to investigate, analyze and evaluate a wide range of cases.
We provide autopsy services to regional hospitals, attorneys and insurance investigators. We provide medical consultation service for legal cases and may serve as expert witnesses. We work closely with funeral home directors in carrying out our service.
The investigative and review procedures we perform satisfy the requirements for Part IV maintenance of certification for the American Board of Pathology. We complete more than 600 autopsies each year and our medical examiner's investigators are certified by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation. We can provide information about our charges upon request.
