The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University offers a four-year, fully accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, we provide quality medical student education.
Each year a significant percentage of our medical students accept residency positions in Ob/Gyn. Our Ob/Gyn residency is directed at producing strong clinicians with the skills, knowledge base and critical thinking skills to practice general Ob/Gyn. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers specific expertise in endocrine/infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, and gynecologic oncology. Our clinical volumes include about 3200 deliveries per year, 600-650 maternal transports per year and 200-250 new cases of cancer per year.
While considerable experience and training is found in the tertiary care nature of our affiliated hospital, Vidant Medical Center, primary care for women remains a central mission of our educational program. I want our residents and students to recognize Ob/Gyn practitioners as the experts in the care of women. An essential part of that process is the exposure to enthusiastic, competent, general practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology. We have a core group of academic clinicians to support our mission.
In summary, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a strong educational experience in clinical medicine. We have a good balance between primary care and tertiary care services. The medical student and the Ob/Gyn resident will graduate from our programs confident in their clinical knowledge and surgical skills in obstetrics and gynecology.
