Histocompatibility (HLA) Laboratory at Vidant Medical Center is accredited by the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) as well as the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
The HLA laboratory provides 24-hour on call support of the renal transplant program at Vidant Medical Center, supports the transfusion service by providing HLA typing as well as HLA antibody identification for patients refractory to platelet transfusions and performs HLA typing for disease association testing most commonly for HLA-B27. The laboratory can also perform HLA testing for bone marrow/stem cell transplant patients.
HLA antibody screening and T and B cell cross matches are performed by flow cytometry. Luminex HLA antibody identification is performed for renal patients and HLA-matched platelet refractory patients.
The HLA laboratory service also engages in teaching programs for the hospital and medical school including didactic sessions, educational seminars and grand rounds related to transplantation.
