The blood transfusion service is a CLIA certified and AABB accredited laboratory serving hospitals within the Vidant Health System.
The laboratory serves hospital inpatients as well as ambulatory patients. In addition the laboratory supports the transfusion needs of a number of specialty services, including highly active cardiac and vascular surgery, kidney transplant, surgery, adult and pediatric hematology/oncology and Level 1 trauma services. Approximately 30,000 blood components are transfused annually.
The transfusion service performs routine and specialized compatibility testing and provides compatible blood products as well as consultation services. Consultations are either initiated automatically when unusual orders are received or when atypical test results are noted and upon physician request.
Residents are actively involved in the consultation service under the guidance of faculty. They are expected to be familiar with the clinical, technical, and administrative aspects of transfusion medicine. Teaching activities are routinely scheduled for in service residents and include discussions of clinical cases at sign out sessions, blood product utilization review and didactic sessions on specific transfusion medicine topics. Residents are encouraged to attend monthly transfusion medicine didactic sessions and education seminars/grand rounds held within the department. They are also encouraged to communicate with hematology/oncology clinicians to follow specific consult patients.
In addition, the transfusion service engages in a multidisciplinary committee meeting to monitor appropriate blood usage and transfusion safety within the Vidant Health System.
