Office 365 - Device Setup

Microsoft recommends that you "connect to your Office 365...account using Outlook Web App or through an email program that supports Exchange ActiveSync access such as Outlook 2013...Outlook for Mac 2011..." (desktop/laptop, Android, iOS, Windows)

Connect to your Office 365 account from most devices through This connection gives you access to all features, but no items are downloaded to your system or device.
Access Office 365 from any device

Email Program, Outlook 2013/2011 (desktop/laptop)

Exchange Connection (recommended)
Follow these steps to configure Outlook 2013 (Windows) or Outlook 2011 (Mac) for your laptop or desktop computer:
  1. Download Microsoft Office through Office 365. Outlook 2013 is included in this download.
  2. Open Outlook and click File.
  3. Choose Account Settings >> Add Account (or the setup wizard may start automatically).
  4. Follow the step-by-step screens.
  5. Type your full email address and passphrase.
  6. At the appropriate step, see the Exchange server settings below.
Your computer establishes a connection with the Office 365 Exchange server. You can now download email, calendar, tasks and contacts to your computer system and manage these items through the Outlook program. Since items are downloaded to your device, please consider setting up a password for your device, especially a laptop.
IMAP Connection (fewer features available)
  1. Download Microsoft Office through Office 365. Outlook 2013 is included in this download.
  2. Open Outlook and click File.
  3. Choose Account Settings >> Add Account (or the setup wizard may start automatically).
  4. Click Manually configure server settings and click Next.
  5. On the Choose Service page, select Internet Email, and then click Next.
  6. Provide the appropriate server settings (see below) on the Internet Email Settings page.
Your computer establishes a connection with your Office 365 account on the Exchange email server. This method has fewer features than the Exchange method.

Mobile Device (Android, iOS, Windows)

ActiveSync (Recommended)
Access your email messages, appointments and meetings, contacts, tasks and voice mail messages through your mobile device by establishing an Exchange ActiveSync connection. Go to the email account setup for your device and choose Exchange Server for account type.
Rather than choosing the Exchange server account type, select Other and complete the setup using the settings below.
Most devices use these settings. If you require assistance, please call the IT Help Desk 252.328.9866, visit the ACE Student Support Center or visit the Walk-in IT Help Desk.
Incoming server settings:
Enter Username (enter entire email address)
Enter Domain Leave this blank
Enter Password ****** (use your ECU passphrase)
Enter Exchange Server
Enter Port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP) (some providers require this)
Check Boxes
  • User secure connect SSL
  • Accept all SSL certificates
Click Done
Agree Activation terms (some providers require this)
*To find your current server name, log in to Office 365 (Web App), click the gear icon, then the Options link. Click Settings for POP or IMAP access...
Outgoing server settings:
SMTP Server
Port 587
Security Type TLS

What if my email stops sending/receiving after a software update?

In most cases, the best way to fix this is to delete the account from your phone and set it back up from scratch as an Exchange account. This applies to both Android and iOS devices.

I received the message that my passphrase is incorrect or expired.

You are required to change your ECU passphrase every 90 days. You will also need to update this passphrase on your mobile device to be able to log in to your email.
