Special Events
PolarBear just words
Polar Bear 2016 was the 20th anniversary of the Student Recreation Center being open. In    January 1997 we began with 35 jumpers and that number climbed to over 1,000 in 2016! Polar  Bear jumpers brave the bitter temperatures and leap into the icy waters of the outdoor pool in the  heart of winter with the lure of a t-shirt and being part of an ECU Tradition.

Special Events are team, individual, and co-recreational in theme, providing all faculty, staff, and students with an opportunity for participation. Events planned for the upcoming year include a variety of events that have been long established campus traditions. Join us early in the semester for Beach Fest and the CRW Showcase which will provide an opportunity to sample many of the program areas at Campus Recreation and Wellness. Whether you enjoy climbing the wall, engaging in low-key sports competition, observing a club sports demonstration, taking part in a large group fitness class, or learning more about nutrition and fitness the Showcase should have something for you.

During CRW Family Weekend, the department opens the doors of the Student Recreation Center to parents and family members participating in the university’s Family Weekend programs. This includes access to the Student Recreation Center during the weekend as well as some specialized programming such as the Family Weekend Canoe/Kayak trips. King and Queen of the Halls renews the annual battle for supremacy of the residence halls that has been in existence since 1988. Residence Hall students do battle in a number of carnival-type games in order to accrue credits and vie for a chance to compete in the tug-of-war.

The start of the Spring means that the Polar Bear Plunge cannot be far behind. This extremely popular event has blossomed from 35 in the first year in 1997 to over 1,000. Polar Bear jumpers brave the bitter temperatures and leap into the icy waters of the outdoor pool in the heart of January with the lure of a t-shirt. The Spring semester also includes the Flatlander’s Fling Climbing Competition and Spring Fest. Check our web site to view the event calendar and more details about each specific activity.
