Smiles for a Lifetime – Oral Health Awareness for Older Adults
People in the U.S. are living longer these days and older adults are one of the fastest growing populations. According to the American Dental Association, “Research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia and other health problems that are common in older adults.”
That’s why students in the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) at ECU are looking for opportunities to share information with older adults about the importance of oral hygiene and professional care—and that it’s never too late to be “mouth healthy.”
Students and faculty offer a multifaceted education and oral screening program called Smiles for a Lifetime that is dedicated to improving the lives of older adults.
Smiles for a Lifetime partners with nursing homes, retirement communities, senior centers, and social organizations to bring awareness to older adults about the link between oral health and general well-being.

About the American Student Dental Association (ASDA)
The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is the largest student dental organization in the country. It is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. This organization introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy. ASDA provides opportunities for dental students to become leaders in the dental school as well as the community, and to give them what they need to become successful in their future of dentistry.
