Welcome to the Department of Surgery at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine. We proudly serve as leaders in clinical education for medical residents and students, and as researchers into advanced surgical approaches and methods. We offer a six-year, fully accredited residency program in general surgery that was recently re-accredited for a full five years by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our residents benefit from a highly personal program that emphasizes individual growth and independent experience.
Our patient care includes pioneering programs in bariatric surgery, transplantation, laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures, as well as excellent plastic and reconstructive surgery after cancer or injury. Our faculty conducted the first six-person kidney transplant exchange in the Carolinas in 2013.
Published research from our department includes groundbreaking studies in genetic markers for cancer; bariatric surgery and diabetes; wound healing; and robotic and minimally invasive approaches.
