ECU Police receive accreditation
(Mar. 27, 2007)
The East Carolina University Police Department received national accreditation status March 17.
ECU was one of approximately 75 agencies from across the U.S. that was awarded accredited status this month from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies during a formal ceremony at a CALEA conference in Greensboro.
“Our task for the next three years will be to maintain our compliance with the standards and to begin compliance with a new edition of standards that was recently published by CALEA,” said Curtis Hayes, accreditation manager for ECU Police Department.
After undergoing an on-site visit and public hearings in December, Hayes and his colleagues attended a final hearing with CALEA commissioners prior to receiving accreditation. The accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
ECU is one of four universities in North Carolina that have an accredited police department, and one of 39 university police departments in the U.S. with accreditation.
