Medical education will be the topic of ECU lecture
(Mar. 16, 2006)
The editor of a national medical journal will present the fourth annual Brody Distinguished Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. A reception will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Eddie L. Hoover, editor-in-chief of the Journal of the National Medical Association and a professor of surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo, will present the lecture, "A Century after Flexner: The Need for Continued Change in Medical Education." The National Medical Association promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent.
The lecture will be held in the auditorium of the Brody Medical Sciences Building and is sponsored by the Brody Foundation.
Published in 1910 by the Carnegie Foundation, the Flexner Report, written by educator Abraham Flexner, advocated radical changes in the way medical schools were operated in the United States and Canada. The report said the country had too many medical schools, that many were substandard, and the pre-requisites for and the content of medical education need to be defined.
